CHICAGO– Opening Minds USA™ announced Spiffy Pictures the winner of its Innovation Award. The Opening Minds Innovation Award, a signature Opening Minds event, honors individuals and organizations throughout the nation whose innovations advance the field of early childhood education.

Opening Minds presented the award on Friday, January 27, 2017 at a private reception at the Sheraton Grand Chicago during the Opening Minds Early Childhood Education, Child Care, and School Age Conference and Expo.

Spiffy Pictures current hit animated series Nature Cat is co-produced by and airs daily on WTTW Chicago. Nature Cat received a coveted 2016 Daytime Emmy® Award Nomination for Outstanding Writing in an Animated Program, a Television Critics Association Award Nomination for Outstanding Achievement in Youth Programming and a Common Sense Media Seal for TV, recognizing the series for providing families an exceptional media experience.

“Spiffy Pictures captures a feeling and translates it in a relevant story that blends our history and present day,” said Gail Conway, Opening Minds CEO. “The beloved characters and storylines of Spiffy Pictures change the animation narrative and inspire the imaginations of a new generation of learners growing up in the digital age. The program inspires, teaches and encourages children to look beyond the screen at the natural wonders of the world.”

“Spiffy Pictures is honored to be recognized among the world-class recipients of Opening Minds Innovation Awards,” stated David Rudman who founded Spiffy Pictures in 2003 with his brother Adam Rudman.

Nature Cat is a show that gets kids excited about the wonders of nature and encourages families to go on active outdoor adventures. In October 2016, Spiffy Pictures announced a second and third season of Nature Cat.

“WTTW is proud to serve as co-producers, with Spiffy Pictures, of Nature Cat, and to present the series nationally. As a public media organization, our mission is to offer our audiences content that is engaging, inspiring, and educational, and Nature Cat resoundingly meets all three of these criteria,” stated Dan Schmidt, President and CEO of WTTW Chicago. “We congratulate the Rudmans and the entire Spiffy team on this well-deserved honor.”
